Jesus: Victim or Victor?

 by Paul D. Fisher

Victim "an individual injured or killed (as by disease or accident); a person cheated, fooled, injured" The Merriam-Webster Dictionary p. 771. Victor "winner, conqueror" The Merriam-Webster Dictionary p. 771.

In our world this is the way we define these two terms, victim and victor. They almost see to be opposites, especially when we consider using them to describe Jesus Christ.

Many intelligent people look at Jesus as being a victim, Pilate was one such person. In Matthew 27:18, we read, "For he knew that for envy they had delivered him." Pilate saw Jesus as a victim. The chief priests and Jewish council were against Him and wanted Him put to death. Finally, to appease the Jewish leadership Pilate consented to Jesus' death and had Him crucified. Some of Jesus' disciples looked at Him in death as a victim (Luke 24:19-2 and went away with sorrow in their hearts. Even the apostles saw Jesus as a victim and feared for their own lives in John 20:19. The very fact that Jesus allowed Himself to be arrested without putting up a fight may have cause some of these people to see Jesus as a victim.

Yet, before we conclude that Jesus was a victim we need to look at Him by another set of eyes. In the book of Revelation when John was weeping because there was no one worthy to op the book that God held in His hand one of the elders told him to stop weeping. "And one the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of Dim hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood the Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spit of God sent forth into all the earth" (Revelation 5:5-6). Notice when John looked he saw the Lamb of God having been slain, but when the elder looked he saw the Lion of the tribe Juda. This elder saw Jesus not as a victim but as a victor! Because of His sacrifice Jesus worthy to open the book and to receive the praise of heaven. Jesus said in John 10:1-8 about His life, "No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of thy Father." Jesus was far from being a victim, He was and is the Victor! As the Victor, He reigns in hear waiting His Father's final command to return to this world and end time and release the bonds of death for all His faithful followers. On that day everyone will come to see Jesus as the Victor and proclaim glory to His name (Philippians 2:9-11).
