A Plain Path

                                           by Paul D. Fisher  May 16, 04

"Teach me thy way, 0 LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies",
(Psalm 27:11). These words of David need to be our watch words. David desired God to give
him a clear path to walk on which would deliver him from his enemies. We also need to make
this request of God and God will answer. Oh, I am not talking about some miracle, but that if
we approach His word with an open and honest heart then God will teach us, and if we are
obedient to that teaching, then He leads us in a plain path. We just need to realize that we,
like David of old, are surrounded by enemies! Enemies that are in the camp of Satan, himself
being our greatest enemy. These enemies are seeking our destruction beth in this life and in
the life to come, and sadly they are very successful if we do not fight them. God has provided
a plain path for all who would seek it in His divine word, but we must be careful because there
are those teachers and preachers who would lead us mlxay. So, we are warned in God's word
to try the Spirits, to check God's word for ourselves, to love the truth of the gospel above all
else. For we read in 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12, "And for this cause God shall send them
strong delusion, titat they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed
not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness."

Notice what can happen to those who do not believe the truth of God's word. God will allow
them to believe that they are alright when they are not. No doubt we see fulfillment of this
passage in Matthew 7:21-23, "Not everyone that saith unto me Lord, Lord shall enter Into
the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will
say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have
cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works ? And then will I profess unto them,
I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

Here Jesus told us about a group of religious people who thought they were doing His will,
but they were not doing things according to Jesus' Father's will. They were deceived into
believing something other than the truth of God's Word. How could this happen? They were
doing many wonderful works in Jesus' name. No doubt this happened because they allowed
someone to lead them from the plain path of the Bible. They may have been helped along to
their destruction because they were not like the noble Bereans of Acts 17:11, "These were
more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind,
and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." It is important for us to daily
search the scriptures. This is more than just reading a few verses or passages, but an earnest
study of the scriptures, allowing God to teach us the truth of His divine word.
