What Does It Take to be a Missionary for Jesus Christ?

 by Paul D. Fisher

To be a missionary for Jesus Christ, first and foremost, takes a burning desire to get the soul-saving message of Jesus out to a lost' and dying people. It takes great love for others and this is easy to see when we see and understand the great love God has demonstrated to mankind in sending His Son, Jesus Christ. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). This past week I witnessed missionaries for Jesus Christ that came in every shape, size and age, from the teens in our group, who seemed always to have a song in their hearts, to the oldest member of our team. Some of these missionaries were men and some were woman, but all had this burning love for God in their hearts.

Secondly, it takes knowledge of God's word to be an effective missionary. I was impressed by the knowledge that even the young' teen members had and were willing to share. Some of these missionaries had only been Christians themselves for a short time but they were willing to go and do what they could. If they did not have enough Bible knowledge themselves to teach a study, they would take with them someone who did or they would start the study and then get someone who had more knowledge to continue the study. One man had been a Christian for only a week and when he found out that we were going to Ica, he begged to go along because many of his family lived there and needed the gospel. Do you have what it takes to be a missionary? It takes basic knowledge and great love to be a missionary.
