You may think that this is a funny, and even silly, question to title a bulletin article! But please stop and think about the question for a minute. This is the type of questions that Jesus asked during the Sermon on the Mount as recorded in Matthew 7:9-10, "Or what man. is there oJ you, whom if his Son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he asa a fish, will he give him a serpent?" We want good things for our children. We do not want to do anything on purpose that could harm themt
Yet, Christian parents are put to the test almost every time there is a school dance, especially when it is the prom. Many Christian parents either ignore the dangers involved with 'dancing or don't understand the dangers involved. Some will say, "They have chaperons there, so nothing can happen." But I ask you, who can chaperon the mind of your son or daughter? Remember the words of Jesus found in Matthew 5:28, "But I say unto you, That whosoever looAeth on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.. ' The same is also true of anyone who looks at a man and lusts aider him. She has committed adultery with him already in her heart. What Jesus was saying in this passage is that lust is sin, a sin that can cause a person to lose their soul. Lust is like a box of matches. It can start a fire that is hard to put out and normally only after some damage has been done.
Some parents may say, "But the young people today do not dance close like they did years ago, so there is less likelihood of lust being caused by a dance." We all need to remember that John the Immerser lost his head because just one person was dancing. Look again at Mark 6:22, "And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the Iting said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee" If Herod was not filled with lust by this dance, he was filled with something worse for in the next verse we read, "And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt aslt of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of the kingdom " Of course, you remember what she asked for, the head of John on a charger. Herod was sorry for making such a rash vow during that moment after the dance, but it was too late.
Let's face it. Dancing is not something that a Christian should be involved in! The dangers are just too great. Just as we would not give our children a box of matches to play with let us instruct them on why Christians do not dance!
