WOULD YOU NAME YOUR DAUGHTER JEZEBEL?

Some names have a stigma attached to them and Jezebel is one of those names! Jezebel was the wife of wicked King Ahab of Israel and we are introduced to her in First Kings 16:3 I. Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Zidonians and she was a worshiper of the god Baal, plus she was intolerant of other faiths. To please her, Ahab built a temple and an altar to Baal in Samada according to First Kings 16:32-33. Jezebel got whatever she wanted by whatever means needed, including murder (1 Kings 2 l'l 622). She also murdered many of the prophets of God (1 King 18:4-13) and planned to murder Elijah (19:1-2), but she failed.

Because of her wickedness, God's prophet was told to foretell her manner of death. In First Kings 21:23, we find this prophecy, 'and of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of JezreeL " This prophecy was fulfilled some eleven years later. Jehu entered Jezreel and had Jezebel thrown down from an upper window to her death, then ran over her with his chariot (2 Kings 9:30-34). Later, because she was a daughter of a king, he sent men out to bury her. But they found nothing left but her skull, feet and the palms of her hands, the dogs had eaten the rest of her.

Even today calling some woman a Jezebel means that she is thought of as being a wicked and evil person. Normally, we name our children with names we like, but do you know anyone who named their daughter Jezebel?
