Why do people worship idols? Some have done it out ignorance, while others out of wanting to be like their friends and neighbors. The apostle Paul wrote about this in Romans 1:21-23, "Because that, when they knew God, they glorifted him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things" What power do idols have to cause people to want to worship them? We read of their power in Psalms 135:15-18, "The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their moaths. They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them." The writer of Psalms pointed out that idols could hear, see, speak or even breath, in other words they had no power. Isaiah pointed out the foolishness of worshiping idols with these words of inspiration of God, "He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfted: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire: And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he fulleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god" (Isaiah 44:16-17).
Most people think that no one in our day and time would worship idols, especially no one here in America~ Sadly, that is no the case! Look around at some of your religious friends who bow down to idols and yet claim they are not worshiping idols. Look at most any Catholic church building which will have at least two statues that they will worship. One will be a statue of Jesus on the cross and the other will be to Mary the mother of Jesus. Catholics will claim that they are not worshiping this statues, but that they just help them to worship God. Yet in so doing they ignore God's teaching on how to worship and who is the only one to pray through, that being Jesus Christ. In the Catholic religion they have many so called "~qaints" that they can pray unto to help them. My friends, this goes directly against God's word. Just like the idols that were made of wood, stone, silver or gold of old, these statues and saints have no power whatsoever to help those who are calling upon them for help.
Don't be misled only God's word tell us that He alone is God who can save us. We would all do well to remember Jesus' words, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind" (Matthew 22:37).
