In Matthew 21:9, when Jesus is entering into Jerusalem we find these words " An the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest." This word "hosanna" comes from the Hebrew word which means, "save, we pray." The word as used in the above verse was used as a means of praise. Originally it is thought by most Hebrew scholars to have been a cry for help. How fitting it is to use this word, hosanna, as a cry for help in association with Jesus Christ. Jesus is the one that was prophesied in Gen 3:15, to redeem mankind by bruising the head of the serpent (the Devil). Jesus stated that His purpose for coming to earth was to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10). It is through Jesus that mankind has the gift of eternal life extended to us according to Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Jesus is the author of our eternal salvation according to Hebrews 12:2, "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." How can we cry out to Jesus, "hosanna"? We can call out to Jesus, "hosanna"? We can call out to Jesus, "Hosanna in the Highest" only by obedience to His will (Hebrews 5:9)!
