Harvest Time

by Paul D. Fisher  Oct 12, 2003

Fall is a time when leaves turn beautiful colors, the temperature cools and many crops are ready to harvest. During this harvest time, that was once looked on as a time of plenty, we get an almost festive spirit. We have two holidays during this time that lead us into winter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. These holidays are days to share with others what we have, whether turkeys or gifts. Harvest time is a time when we are more likely to share with others which is reflected in the fact that we have plenty. Many of you put up fruit and vegetables from your garden during the summer looking toward the fall and winter when you will relish the taste of home grown, home canned foods.

Harvest time should remind us of the fact that as Christians there is another harvest time going on that we need to be busy with throughout the year. Often in the Bible, harvest time is used in a figurative sense, as harvesting souls for the kingdom of God. Jesus referred to this often in His parables about being busy in the kingdom or vineyard of God. We even sing about it in the song "Sowing the Seed of the Kingdom." in this song we are reminded of the great harvest time that we are in and the sheaves we need to be gathering at the harvest home. Remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 9:37, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;" Are you a laborer that God can count On in this harvest?
