The Greek word for "milk" is "gala" and it is used in the New Testament in both literally and figuratively. We see the use of the word milk in a literal sense in 1 Corinthians 9:7, "Who goeth a warfare any Me at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereoff? or who feedeth a fiock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?" In this passage, the apostle Paul was justifying he and Barnabas accepting help from their fellow Christians so they could continue to preach and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ full-time instead of having to work to support themselves. In 1 Peter 2:2 we find the word used in a figurative way, "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:" In this passage the word milk is used to mean the fundamental truths of God's word, whereby a new Christian can be grounded in the truth beginning then to mature.
This milk of the word which nourishes the soul is also involved in the exhortation of Roihans 12:1, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present yourselves a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God; which is your reasonable service" Our reasonable service is based on the fact that God's word is nourishment for the spiritual part of all mankind. Since it is by the mercy of God that we have His word which nourishes us it is reasonable for us to live according to God's will. Remember the words of Jesus when tempted by Satan to turn stones into bread, "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" For a person to be completely nourished they must not only feed tho physical part of self but also the spiritual part and the spiritual part is nourished by the word of God.
The wonderful thing about God's word is that it is written so that even the new baby in Christ can understand it and gain nourishment from it. God's word was not given so that it would be impossible to understand nor was it given so that it requires a special class of scholars to interpret it. Its character is such that even the alien sinner can read and be convicted by it and understand what he or she needs to do to become acceptable to God. To borrow a slogan from the dairy industry, "Got Milk!" God's word is the source of all nourishment that the person of God needs. Are you feeding on the Word of God on a daily basis?
