Almighty
by Paul Fisher

The Greek word "pantokrator" translated "almighty" is used only of God and is found only in Second Corinthians 6:18,  "" And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."  This Greek word means "ruler of all." Truly, this is a word that is suitable to describe our God, for He truly is ruler of all. He created the universe and everything that is contained in it that is good. We can see His power over even the demons when Jesus cast them out, for they understood that He had power over them to cast them out, and they feared Him.
Sometimes we get so caught up with the love of God that we forget that He is truly the Almighty, and as such, we should fear Him. In Hebrews 10:31, we read, "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." The reason it is a fearful thing is because of what Jesus explained to us in Luke 12:5, "But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him." Jesus had just declared that we should not fear men who can kill us, but after that, they have no power over us. Instead, fear God because He is the Almighty and His power over us does not end at death. This fear should be tempered by our love and respect for God and our desire to do His will! Let us therefore praise God the Almighty for being our Father!
