Does society have the right to change God's word and allow women to take leadership roles in worship to Him? Many in our society would answer, "Yes, after all we must keep up with the times." Some would claim that the Bible was written in a male dominated world and so it reflects that male dominance with outdated restrictions on females. Others claim that women have made great advancement in recent years on equality and so they should be allowed any role in religion that a man can fill. The thinking is, we now have women in leadership roles in all other aspects of society so why not in religion? Some will even go so far as to claim that the Bible teaches that women are no different than men, so they should be allowed to take leadership roles in religion. Their pet verse that many mm to is Galatians 3:28, which reads, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.' Especially the denominations have used this verse in recent years to try and justify women in leadership roles including women preaching to mixed groups of people. Yet, when one keeps Galatians 3:28 in its context one finds that this passage is not teaching on worship but who is acceptable as a Christian. The Jews, the Greeks, those who were servants, those who were free people, both male and female, all need to be in Christ Jesus for salvation.
In I Corinthians 14:34-35, we read, "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home:for it is a shame for women to speak in the church." Here is a clear passage on the subject of whether women be in leadership roles or not, written by an inspired apostle. Later, Paul again was directed by God to address the role of women, this time in I Timothy 2:11-15, "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety." Here we find God's explanation of why women were not given leadership roles in His church.
Since it was God who set up His church in this manner, we have no right to change it. We need to remember that Jesus Christ is the one who set up the church (Matt. 16:18-19), that He is the one who gave His life for His church (Acts 20:28), plus that only He has all authority (Matt. 28:18), as the only head of the church (Eph. 1:22) to make changes not society!
