What Good Is Two Hundred Bibles?

 by Paul D. Fisher 3/24/05

The city of Lima, Peru has a population of over 8 million people! Once again this year we an taking two hundred Spanish language Bibles to this city. Some people might think that is just a drop in the bucket compared to the needs of 8 million people. Some might even think to say, "What good is two hundred Bibles in a city of 8 million?" This is much like Jesus' disciples saying, "What good is five small loaves of bread and a few fishes?" Remember what Jesus did with this small amount? He commanded the men to be divided into groups of fifty and He took the bread and the fish and blessed it and brake it. After 5,000 men had eaten their fill, the disciples took up twelve baskets of leftovers (Matthew 14:15-21).

Brethren, we should rejoice that God has blessed us with the means to once again buy and take two hundred Bibles to a people who are spiritually starving, if we have enough patience, we can count all the apples on an apple tree, but only God can look at an apple seed and count all the apples contained in that seed. Remember in our sermons on the parables of Jesus that the word of God was often referred to as the seed. We can count the number of Bibles that we are taking, but we cannot count the number of Christians that even one of those Bible can produce! We took two hundred Bibles last year and now we are blessed to take another two hundred Bibles this year, that makes four hundred Bibles. Brethren, only God knows how much good four hundred Bibles can do in a city of 8 million people.

We should rejoice and praise God because when we read His word we find out that many times He has used a small number to accomplish great things. Many of these would be impossible to the thoughts of those in the world! Remember, Jesus chose just twelve apostles to take the gospel into the whole world and the apostle Paul said they fulfilled Jesus command (Romans 10:18). Gideon, with an army of just three hundred men, defeated a much larger foe because God was with them and fought for them (Judges 6-8). Plus, God has promised that His word will not come back to Him void. What is four hundred Spanish language Bibles in a city of 8 million, a very powerful weapon indeed. This is a weapon that causes Satan to tremble at the thought of four hundred Spanish language Bibles in the hands of people who might read and obey. It is true, just like here, not everyone who receives one of these Bibles will obey, but brethren there is already a small, but very hard working group of Christians in Lima. Armed with these extra Bibles, their numbers will grow and you will have had a hand in their growing numbers. Just think, some day in heaven, someone might walk up to you and shake your hand and say thank you for giving the money that brought my Bible!
